Living a healthy life and exercising regularly is not just something people aspire to these days, they’re actually doing it! But not without some help. Some of you may be taking advantage of the benefits of a personal trainer, while others might simply turn to music to provide that often needed but difficult to find motivation.
Another helpful tool you have at your disposal is the thing you’re (likely) holding right now in order to read this article (or it could possibly be in your pocket or on the table next to you)… YOUR PHONE! I’m sure this doesn’t come as a surprise, but your phone can be such an asset in motivation, accountability, tracking, and so much more. There are TONS of apps out there that can absolutely change your life!
The #1 Fitness App That Can Change Your Life
So you may have heard about several different health and fitness apps, for example:
- Couch to 5k – This app is exactly as the title reads! It’ll give you workouts to help prepare you for your 5k. So if you’re new to running, then this one is for you.
- Sworkit – This app is great because it asks you simple questions like what you want your work out to focus on (strength, stretching, cardio etc.) and how much time you have. Then it creates the workout for you!
- Spotify running – What’s so cool about this app is that it chooses songs for you that match your running pace! No more unintentionally decelerating because a slower song came on!
- myfitnesspal – This one is fantastic when it comes to tracking your diet; whether you’re trying to lose or gain weight, it’ll help you get there.
These are all fantastic apps, but the one I want to focus on today is Nike+ Training Club. This was one of the very first apps I downloaded on my phone years ago and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. It was one of those random “let’s search through the App Store and see if anything looks good” moments. And that moment did not let me down! Years later, I still use it frequently to get in a good work out.
So What’s the Big Deal?
Nike+ Training Club (NTC) is such a great tool for many reasons (and it would honestly bore you if I listed them all), but mostly because there are SO many different workouts that target all parts of your body, you can filter and search to find your perfect set, and you can create a program designed specifically for your needs! What else could you want?
There are a total of 152 different workouts in the app. I don’t know about you, but that’s a LOT! It’s going to take you quite a while to complete all of them. Some of the workouts are targeted for upper body, others lower body, total body, or core. They can be categorized as strength, endurance, or mobility. And there are three different options for timing. If you’ve got a tight schedule, the 15 minute circuits are perfect. No plans today? Fit a full 45 minute circuit in! Honestly, it has nearly any type of workout you could possibly want.
Filter and Search
This is my FAVORITE FEATURE!! I literally use this every time. You need to go to the workouts tab and then scroll to the bottom to find “view all workouts”. Once you’re there, you can filter to customize exactly what you’re looking for!
I’ve already mentioned the type of workout and time, but you can also pick the equipment. Your options are full, basic, or none. I think this is SO key because some people don’t have anything, whereas others have a full gym. This way, it works for everyone. Two other awesome filters are intensity and level. This will help pick a workout more in tuned to what you need. A new exercise go-er is not going to do full burpees just yet, and by choosing beginner, they’ll get an easier workout. After you pick your filters and hit “done” a list of workouts that fit your search will pop up! Just choose one and get going!
This is a fairly new aspect to NTC and even though I’m a personal trainer and this should scare me, I love it! NTC can now create an exercise program designed specifically for you. It will run you through some basic questions such as how many days per week you want to work out and whether you’d like to do some cardio as well, what equipment you have, how many weeks you want the program to last, etc. Then with a click of a button, you’ve got yourself a plan!
It pulls in specific workouts from the library that fit your needs and schedules them. Now it’s not going to hold you accountable like a real personal trainer, but this function of the app is seriously AWESOME! It even has a beginning fitness test you go through and then again throughout the program to see how you’re doing.
With those three amazing features, it’s not hard to see why I love this app. Even though I know how to create an effective workout, sometimes I don’t feel like doing it, or I just don’t have the time. It’s so easy for me to log in, filter it down, and then just get it done. If my three reasons didn’t convince you that you NEED this app in your life, maybe this additional list of benefits will help!

- Music – you can have it access your music library, or select none and use a different app (Like Pandora or Spotify)
- Videos – each exercise has a video to show you exactly how to perform the move
- Different layout – the workout can be done in list view or video view
- Tracking – all the workouts you complete are tracked by day
