Halloween is just around the corner!! I know, I can’t believe it’s October already either (I feel like I say that every time it’s a new month…) But you all know what Halloween means – candy, candy and MORE CANDY! And oh man do I love my candy, but I hate the guilty feeling I get after eating a few pieces. Okay, okay more like the whole bag. Jeez, way to call me out! But don’t fret, there is a way to enjoy all of that Halloween goodness without over doing it on the sugar! In fact, I’ve got a list of 9 healthy Halloween treats that’ll prove you don’t need to stock up on candy to make it a Halloween to remember!
Have a Healthy Halloween
Some of you may be thinking, but Kathleen, it’s Halloween, I HAVE to eat candy! And to that I would say, WELL DUH! It’s Halloween, you can’t NOT have candy. I totally get that (and will also be indulging in some sweet chocolatey scrumptiousness – is that a word?). But I also get not wanting to consume your entire body weight in candy, or loading your children up on sugar, or hitting your calorie mark for the day in one treat. So I wanted to find a few, great treats that will get you in the holiday spirit, help curb that sweet tooth, and maybe even spook you a bit. Often times people think healthy and delicious can’t go together when it comes to dessert, but that’s just not true!
These fellow bloggers have come up with some adorable and creepy, but mainly delicious treats. Most of them contain very few ingredients and are super simple to make. They’d be a perfect addition to any party and would certainly please the pickiest of eaters! We’ve got a bit of everything for you to enjoy – some fruits, some veggies, some pumpkin flavor of course, and a sweet twist on a classic candy! Plus a little bonus!
So go ahead, check out these recipes and stay for a while. I’m sure you’ll find a few other posts in their awesome blogs that’ll peak your interest!
9 Healthy Halloween Treats
This apple snack has to be the most adorable, edible monster I have ever seen! By using two different fruits and only a few other simple ingredients, you too can create this cuteness! And you won’t feel bad if your little monster wants a second because there’s no candy involved! What I love about these apple monsters, is that they are a healthy and filling snack that’s perfect for after school, after a workout (although I’m usually too hungry to take the time to create anything this cute), or after dinner.
You all know I LOVE energy balls, especially my oatmeal peanut butter energy bites, and these pumpkin protein balls are no exception! If you love anything and everything pumpkin, then you’re going to love these. And you really can’t beat a delicious bite that doesn’t need baking! Plus, there’s only four ingredients. I’d say that fits right in with the whole simple theme we’ve got going on here!
Again with the pumpkin flavors! These delicious cookies are your perfect soft and chewy fall dessert. Sweetened only with maple syrup, you’d never know they don’t contain ANY sugar!!! (Just like my honey banana muffins I recently shared!). What’s unique about these cookies is that they use almond and oat flour which helps keep them healthier than your average pumpkin cookie! But don’t worry, they taste just as good!
These have to be the creepiest and coolest recipe on this list! Just look at those fingers!!! How awesome! I have a feeling these will be a huge hit at any Halloween party! You’d never guess what gives them that spooky green color though– Spinach!! And the gooey blood? Oh come on, I can’t give away all the good stuff! No one will ever know you’ve tricked them into eating spinach when they try these fingers. Instead, all they’ll taste is the peanut buttery goodness!
Aren’t these the cutest ghosts?! And I really don’t think you can make a much easier snack! You’ll feel good giving your little ones a banana with just a hint of sweetness and not overload them with sugar! Plus, the eyes add a touch of fun! Bonus points if you can find adorable straws like these! Go ahead and make a bunch, line them all up, and you’ll have a whole ghost family. But watch out, I bet they won’t last long!
Don’t let this title fool you, this recipe is chia seed pudding… but don’t you agree it makes a very creepy and healthy snack? When those chia seeds swell, they truly do look a little odd so why not call it something cool! Again, this is a very simple recipe with only a few ingredients, and you won’t feel guilty indulging in a large bowl of this pudding!
Candy Corn Fruit Cocktail
Who doesn’t love candy corn!?! Okay, I realize quite a few people don’t, and I think you’re all crazy! But this recipe doesn’t actually include any candy corn unless you want to throw some on top. In fact, this recipe might just be the EASIEST on this entire list! And that’s hard to do considering most contain very few ingredients. What I love about this snack is the sweet twist on the classic candy. All you need is two different fruits, some whipped topping and you have an awesome snack that’s sure to satisfy! It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s delicious! The trifecta in my book!
Another amazing pumpkin recipe for you, and they use oat flour too instead of your normal all purpose flour. You only need one bowl and one pan to make these delicious bars (The less dishes, the better in my opinion)! Since you’re making a whole pan of these, that means LEFTOVERS! They are moist and sweet, but not too sweet. A perfect healthy breakfast for your family!
Okay, so this isn’t necessarily a treat… but it’s totally a bonus! This spooky black pasta dinner is SO PERFECT for a filling meal before Trick or Treat! That way, your little super heroes are full of good stuff and won’t be reaching for all the candy (or maybe not quite as many pieces)! The colors in this dish literally couldn’t be more perfect, black and orange?! I mean seriously! Whatever you do, don’t tell anyone it’s chock full of veggies! Shhh, it’ll be our little secret!
Halloween is a time for fun and food and treats and I don’t think you should have to compromise on taste! Whether you’re just looking for a fun new twist on a party snack, or you want to lighten the sugar load this holiday, these snack ideas should do the trick!
